Set to jump at 3:10pm (AEST) as Rosehill Race 7, this year’s $150,000 Listed ATC Winter Stakes (1400m) has attracted a capacity final field of 13 starters plus three emergency runners.
Dominating the Winter Stakes odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au are Burning Passion and Gold Symphony, the two last start winners paying $4.40 and $5 respectively to continue their gun winter form.
Getting the weight advantage in the handicap on 57.5kg is the Mark Newnham-trained Northern Meteor five-year-old Burning Passion looking for his third win on the trot.
The galloper was last seen saluting in the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m) in Brisbane on June 24 carrying 54.5kg to a half-length win.
He is now out to bring his stellar Queensland form back home to Sydney on Saturday, going up in weight.
Carting the 59kg top weight, the bookies rate the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Gold Symphony as the obvious danger.
The Reward For Effort four-year-old saluted at the Rosehill track at the start of the month with 56.5kg on his back when holding out The Monstar in the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m).
Prior to that he ran a competitive sixth under three lengths off Impending in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m), so brings for against some very good horses into Saturday’s race.
Two other hopefuls are also under double-figures for the win with another Team Snowden runner Extensible ($7) drawn a treat in gate two and Oxford Poet ($8) who is second-up after an unplaced run at the course when carting a hefty 61kg on July 1.
The Kim Waugh-trained Oxford Poet should relish a drop back to 55.5kg this weekend and connections will also be taking positives after the horse’s last start conqueror, Calanda, franked the form with his Listed The Ramornie Handicap (1200m) win at Grafton on Wednesday.
So will the single-figure fancies salute or is there value to be had further down the Winter Stakes markets from the likes of Glasshouse Handicap runner-up Snippets Land ($16) or Bruce Hill’s third placegetter in the same Queensland lead-up Man Of His Word ($12) who has a wide alley to overcome?

#8 Oxford Poet ($8)
Going for a bit of value and tipping the six-year-old Dylan Thomas gelding from Wyong to salute second-up. He’s got a solid Place rate two runs in (5-0-2-2) and can improve on his lead-up seventh at the track from July 1 when jumping at $26 roughie. The extra distance up from 1100m suits with his form over 1400m pretty good (10-2-2-3). He’s got plenty of top three performances at the Rosehill track (10-3-1-2) and comes right back in weight from 61kg to 55.5kg in a boost. His last start form was also franked with the winner backing up to take out Wednesday’s Ramornie Handicap.
2nd
#3 Burning Passion ($4.40)
Pretty hard to knock this horse at the moment following his back-to-back Brisbane wins. Up in weight from last start, but carried similar kilos (57kg) to victory in late May over 1200m in the wet at Eagle Farm. Has previous winning form at Rosehill and is peaking. Will be in the finish for sure.
3rd
#9 Shiraz ($10)
Good odds on offer for another Waugh-trained hopeful, the veteran seven-year-old coming off some very close runs this time in. Two back his Eye Liner (1350m) sixth at Ipswich saw him beaten only a length with 59kg in the weight-for-age showdown. Then ran three lengths fifth behind Gold Symphony in the Civic Stakes. Gets the weight turnaround on his last start conqueror in the rematch, dropping to 55.5kg (from 56.5kg) while Gold Symphony goes up from 56.5kg to 59kg. Genuine Rosehill specialist (9-4-2-0) who represents the value.
